During Saturday’s game against Houston, Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers sustained a shoulder injury and is now considered week-to-week according to head coach Steve Sarkisian.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Maalik Murphy is now in line to start against BYU and potentially a few games following. Murphy, a former four-star recruit out of California, has a sturdy frame at 6-foot-5, 235-pounds.
During his time at Junipero Serra High School, Murphy made a significant impact. Despite not starting becoming the full-time starter until his senior year, he made the most of his opportunity and led his team to an 11-4 record, threw for nearly 3,000 yards, and tallied 22 touchdowns. He concluded his high school career with 4,548 passing yards and 37 touchdowns while averaging 14.2 yards per attempt.
Murphy spent his true freshman season with Texas rehabbing from an ankle injury, but now appears ready to step in and keep the Longhorns afloat in the Big 12 title race.
Sarkisian stated his confidence in Murphy this week to the media. “There isn’t a throw he cannot make, and I think he has really good leadership qualities,” Sarkisian said.
In Texas’ spring game back in April, Murphy looked sharp completing 9-of-13 pass attempts for 165 yards and one touchdown. Here’s a look at Murphy’s performance in the Orange-White game earlier this year.
