Mitch Morse, Vernon Butler and now Mario Addison.
The hits keep coming for the Buffalo Bills prior to free agency, and specifically the contract reductions continue to roll in.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport on Friday, Addison becomes the third Bills player this week to not only restructure his deal, but to give the team more salary cap space by reducing his contract.
Morse was the first to do so and then Butler followed.
Full financial details of Addison’s restructured contract have yet to be disclosed and the same can be said for Butler’s. In the case of Morse, he’s reportedly saving the Bills near $3 million in salary cap space next season.
These contract restructures come around the same time the NFL announced that the 2021 salary cap will be set at $182.5M. That’s down from $198.2M last season and the drop off is a reason why Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane has had to re-work these contracts.
In regard to Addison, he has long been pegged as a player that could have his deal changed up this offseason. According to Spotrac, cutting Addison would have saved the Bills near $6M against that lowered salary cap.
Additionally, Addison didn’t exactly have a great first year with the team either, so it was hard to envision justifying not changing his contract with those potential savings in mind.
Addison did share the team lead with fives sacks (AJ Klein), but the 33-year-old’s consistency left something to be desired. Addison is back in the fold now for 2021, but depending on what was exactly changed in his contract, the Bills could still try to bolster their pass rush with another edge defender as the offseason rolls on.
Addison originally joined the Bills last offseason via a three-year deal.
