Chris Ash – Defensive Coordinator
Texas’ defense was the main struggle last season and some changes had to be made. After firing Todd Orlando from the defensive coordinator role, Tom Herman hired another coach he has worked with in the past, Chris Ash. While Herman may be catching slack for hiring another one of his friends, Ash has proven himself as a worthy defensive coordinator in the past.
In a conference with offense being dominant, having a solid defensive coordinator instantly gives you an advantage. The talent is there for the Longhorns for them to have one of the best defenses in the entire country. Now, it is Ash’s job to put it all together on the field and produce. He has already begun doing that with several position changes and changing up the scheme.
Something the defense will have going into 2020 is returning talent. Big-time names like Joseph Ossai and Caden Sterns are coming back to lead a unit that must improve next season. Spending time on the staff throughout the 2019 season, Ash is already familiar with this Texas team. Now, he must take it to the next level in order to meet expectations.
