Going into the 2020 football season, LonghornsWire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Texas roster.
Over the summer, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for Tom Herman this season.
Today, we will be looking at senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger.
Sam Ehlinger, Quarterback
Height: 6-3 / Weight: 230
Class: Senior
Hometown: Austin
High School: Westlake
HS ranking (247Sports): Four-star / No. 208 overall / No. 4 position / No. 28 in-state
HS ranking (Rivals): Four-star / No. 115 overall / No. 5 position / No. 17 in-state
Analysis: Not only is Sam Ehlinger the main leader on the field but the senior quarterback is the current face of Texas football. Coming into his fourth year in the program and his third season as the full-time starter, Ehlinger has the weight of massive expectations on his shoulders this season.
Back in 2018, Ehlinger got the Longhorns to a Big 12 championship and won the Sugar Bowl against SEC powerhouse Georgia. Much of the same was expected last season but Ehlinger and the offense stalled at important times during conference play.
Recently hired offensive coordinator Mike Yurich is expected to change that problem, helping Ehlinger play at an elite level throughout all 12 games. With new and a different variety of receivers in 2020, the Texas offense is going to have plenty of weapons to go to. Ehlinger is poised for a breakout season which hopefully sees the Longhorns win their first Big 12 championship since 2009.
