Locked on Longhorns Podcast: ‘Takeaways from Day 1 of National Signing Day’

Patrick Conn and Griffin McVeigh discuss their initial reactions to Texas’ 2021 signees on the first day of early signing period.

The first day of the early signing period is now in the books for the Texas Longhorns.

They concluded the day with signing a total of 19 commitments for the class of 2021, enough to land Texas at No. 17 overall in the national rankings. The class was led by five-star athlete Ja’Tavion Sanders and running back Jonathon Brooks was another impressive signing in the class.

Head coach Tom Herman also stated on Wednesday, “we are going to miss the heck out of Sam Ehlinger.” That gave a pretty clear indication that the Longhorns are going to be looking at a new starting quarterback to begin the 2021 season. The discussion starts with Casey Thompson and Hudson Card, but which quarterback has the leg up heading into the offseason?

Given that the Longhorns will have about nine spots left to fill for the class, where do they turn? The growing number of Texas players entering themselves in the transfer portal is alarming, will other players choose to go that route? On the flip side, Texas has also benefitted from the transfer portal — they found Parker Braun, Brenden Schooler and Tarik Black as graduate transfers recently, could Texas add a few graduate transfers like Darion Dunn?

Plenty to be discussed on the fallout from the first part of the early signing period for the Texas Longhorns. Patrick and Griffin break it all down, including what positions are in the most need of an upgrade.
