Lions fans give thank you donations to Deshaun Watson’s charity

After the Houston Texans Thanksgiving Day victory over the Detroit Lions directly led to the firing of coach Matt Patricia and general manager Bob Quinn, fans gave “thank you” donations to Deshaun Watson’s charity.

Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, “countless Lions fans had given to the Deshaun Watson Foundation — totaling $1070 as of Sunday morning”.

Our good friends over at Pride of Detroit tracked the source of the idea back to a Detroit Lions Reddit page that suggested fans donate $13 to Watson’s charity, $1 for each of Patricia’s wins during his tenure in Detroit.

According to Watson’s charities website, the foundation “is dedicated to education, health, housing and other charitable causes that support families and youth in underserved communities.”

According to Rapoport, as a way of saying thank you to Lions fans, “Watson will match the donation, providing the first 100 with free lunch at Lefty’s in Detroit, the same restaurant that catered the Texans’ pregame meal on Wednesday night. Watson is a large equity owner in Lefty’s, a casual dining franchise, which opens in Houston in mid-December. It’s his way of saying thank you.”

At the end of the day, it’s a nice gesture by Lions fans and Watson to give back to their communities, regardless of how the concept was formed.
