Landon Collins takes tough love approach to Haskins; says ‘no being patient’ this year

Collins knows that the Redskins defense is built to succeed now, so he’s doing everything he can to push Haskins and the offense to the top.

The make-up of the Washington Redskins has grown a bit unbalanced over the past year, as the defense is stacked with talent across the board, and ready to be put into a position where they can win some games and make some noise in the NFL. The offense, however, is still lacking a few playmakers on paper, with a bunch of young and unproven guys being thrown out there and hoping to succeed. There’s one player, though, that can single-handedly raise the bar for the Redskins offense and push them over the top into success by raising his game — quarterback Dwayne Haskins.

Haskins has been working hard this offseason to improve his game and become the franchise QB that Washington envisioned when drafting him No. 15 overall in 2019, and the veteran players around him and pushing him to be better as well. It might not always be a soft touch that they use, though, as strong safety Landon Collins laid out this week.

“I’m on Dwayne Haskins’ tail every given second,” Collins said on ESPN’s First Take. “If he makes a bad throw when we got 1’s-on-1’s, we’re picking on him, trying to get into his head as much as possible. There’s no being patient on this side — we want the best for our team, we want the best for our players, we want the best for our brothers.”

Collins made sure to mention that he believes Haskins is ready for the challenge, but that’s not without a little bit of help from the defense. If Haskins is going to face some of the top defensive units in the NFL in live-action this season, it stands to help that he has a solid group of veteran players to go against in practice, forcing him to sink or swim when the snaps don’t count on the scoreboard.

The defense in Washington is good enough to compete, on paper at least, and they’ll be doing everything they can to keep the team in games. By doing that, Collins knows that he can help the team get some wins.

“We win championships on defense, we make plays on defense, but we have to give our offense the best opportunity to put points on the board so we can get W’s.”
