The Tennessee volleyball team opened its season with an exhibition victory Friday night.
The Lady Vols swept Appalachian State, 25-12, 25-17, 25-18, at Thompson-Boling Arena.
Tennessee head coach Eve Rackham Watt used different lineup combinations and showcased the Lady Vols’ depth as five newcomers appeared in the match against the Mountaineers.
The first-year Lady Vols who played in the match included Paola Laborda, Breana Runnels, Ashlyn King, Nicole Shanahan and Klaudia Pawlik.
Rackham Watt said she was pleased with Tennessee’s effort.
“I think it’s a good way to start,” she said. “The best thing about today is that we got to see a bunch of different lineups and different players on the floor.
“We got a chance to rest some players and we some experience for some players. I was happy about that.”
For Appalachian State, former Knoxville are prep star Sophie Cain had six assists in limited court time.
Cain, a sophomore for the Mountaineers, was a four-year starter at Knoxville’s West High School.
