K’Waun Williams misses 49ers practice, Arik Armstead nearing return

The 49ers are already dealing with injury issues in training camp, although Arik Armstead is close to returning.

The 49ers on Monday were without defensive lineman Arik Armstead and nickel corner K’Waun Williams for the second consecutive day.

Armstead appears to be making progress toward a return after missing the first two sessions with what was described as ‘back irritation.’ Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area noted that Armstead was in pads Monday for the first day of padded practice. Cam Inman at the Bay Area News Group said Armstead was working out on a side field.

There’s no specific timeline on his return to full practices, but he’s one of the players who won’t need a ton of work to get up to speed in camp. Taking extra caution with the last year’s sack leader makes sense for San Francisco.

Williams’ prognosis is a little more ominous. He missed the last two days and is undergoing an MRI on his calf according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. The extent of the injury is unknown, but he’s one of the 49ers’ best defensive players and their options for replacing him aren’t thin.

It’ll be worth keeping a close eye on Williams’ status with kickoff for the regular season less than a month away. We’ll provide an update as soon as the team provides one.
