Kendrick Perkins believes Klay Thompson needs a fresh start

The former NBA champion believes the Golden State Warriors veteran needs a fresh start.

Kendrick Perkins believes the Golden State Warriors should move on from Klay Thompson. The veteran wing has had a torrid start to the season, especially in scoring. He is also in the final year of his current contract and will be an unrestricted free agent next summer.

The 2008 NBA champion’s comments came during a recent episode of ESPN’s “NBA Today.” Perkins noted Thompson isn’t a second option on a contending team at this point in his career. Instead, Perkins believes he is better suited to being the third star on a roster and could do with a change of scenery to galvanize his performances.

“It’s actually time for Golden State to move on from Klay Thompson,” Perkins said. “I think this marriage has run its course, and I think Klay needs a fresh start with a new organization. Is he a No. 1 on a contending team? No. Is he a No. 2 on a contending team? No. But he is a No. 3, a third option, and I think he needs a fresh start.”

If the Warriors don’t plan on retaining Thompson or aren’t willing to meet his contract demands, it may make sense to move him before the Feb. 8. trade deadline. That way, the front office can at least receive something back for parting with a pillar of their 10-year dynasty.

Nevertheless, it’s unlikely the Warriors part ways with Thompson. It’s clear Joe Lacob and the front office want to win with their core trio, and Thompson is a big part of that. Still, the veteran shooter will need to snap out of his shooting slump if he doesn’t want to find himself being floated in endless trade rumors over the coming months.
