Former Ohio State and current Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields had a pretty good preseason debut against Miami last week. He was asked about how he’s adjusting to the speed of the game afterward and he went on to say that it was “actually kind of slow” to him.
That blew up in the media. Many marveled at how a rookie can come into the league and not have to adjust to the speed of the game, while others criticized the former Heisman finalist for sounding arrogant and cocky.
Well, one week later and Fields’ performance against the Bills didn’t go quite as well. There are several reasons why, but it had nothing to do with the speed of the game. Still, Fields took some time to clarify his comments just to set the record straight and make sure everyone knew exactly what he meant by those statements.
“Let me tidy that up because that came out totally wrong…Apparently the narrative was that, I’m just that good that the game is too slow,” Fields said. “What I meant to say was, I go up against our first-team defense a lot throughout the week, so me going against them and playing these preseason games when starters aren’t in, that’s going to slow the game down for me. Again, I wanted to clear that up because I don’t want to come off as cocky or act like I already made it because I know I’ve got a lot of work to do and get better at.”

Good on Fields for circling back on those comments. Like everything these days though, he’ll have a positive reaction from those that idolize him, and eye-rolls from those that don’t, saying that he’s only walking back a brash moment.
It’s of course the former if you know anything about his character, but that doesn’t seem to be what most people look at in the days of social media and hiding behind a keyboard.
Still, we say nice job clarifying that statement. Now, go out and grab that starting spot under center in the Windy City.
