Josh Heupel provides update on Cooper Mays

Josh Heupel provides update on offensive lineman Cooper Mays ahead of playing Virginia.

Senior offensive lineman Cooper Mays enters his fourth season at Tennessee in 2023.

Mays missed time during fall training camp due to an undisclosed minor procedure.

Third-year head coach Josh Heupel updated Mays’ injury on Monday ahead of the Vols playing Virginia.

“With Cooper, we’ll find out his availability as the week goes on,” Heupel said. “We’ve had two and a half to three weeks to give guys opportunities to play on the interior if he’s not able to go. I feel really confident in those guys.”

Mays started 13 games at center for the Vols in 2022. He played and started in eight games at center during the 2021 campaign, while appearing in 10 contests and two starts at center as a freshman in 2020.

Kickoff between the Vols and Cavaliers is slated for noon EDT (ABC) on Saturday at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee.
