The Buffalo Bills defense, and secondary specifically, had a field day against the New York Jets and quarterback Mike White.
They were thankful afterword.
In Week 10, Buffalo topped New York, 45-17. It was possibly more lopsided than that because the Bills defense had five takeaways, including four interceptions against White.
A fifth, a fumble recovery from safety Micah Hyde, gave Buffalo a cycle of sorts.
All five defensive backs in the Bills’ secondary, Hyde, Levi Wallace, Jordan Poyer, Tre’Davious White and Taron Johnson ended up with a takeaway against the Jets.
After the game, even Buffalo’s defenders were shocked thinking about it.
“It’s crazy,” Wallace said via video conference. “Still processing it.”
But that wasn’t exact the dagger comment the Bills had postgame. That one went to Poyer.
Asked if he knew he was the only one of the five without a takeaway before his happened, Hyde jumped in and said “heck yeah” Poyer did.
Then walking off the podium, Poyer responded to both Hyde and the question in a way that White won’t like.
“Yeah, I knew I was the only one who didn’t have one yet so I had to figure out a way to go get one,” Poyer said. “Thank you Mike White for five.”
Ouch, Jordan. At least White wasn’t the one who fumbled. That was Jets tight end Ryan Griffin.
But to Poyer and the Bills’ credit, they earned the right to do a little of that talking. It’s never easy to take the ball away that many times in one game, especially after a disappointing loss loss last week, 9-6, vs. the Jacksonville Jaguars.
“Nobody panicked, we just came ready to work,” Poyer said.
In a way, that loss helped the Bills win against the Jets. There was plenty of motivation for Buffalo.
“We needed a win, it doesn’t matter how we get it,” Hyde said. “We want to win, our backs were against the wall after last week. It was a tough loss and we wanted to get a win today.”
“Having that bad taste in our mouth from last week it put a little more urgency in our preparation,” Wallace added. We didn’t get enough turnovers so that was one of our main focuses this week was to give the offense more chances to score.”
