Travis Kelce’s relationship with Taylor Swift — a.k.a. “Swelce” — has taken the sports and music world by storm. With Swift being arguably the most famous musical artist in the world, that means Kelce has a bigger spotlight on him than ever. It also means some Swift’s fans will be eager to learn more about football so they can keep up with Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs’ exploits.
He and his brother Jason Kelce were more than happy to oblige during a Q&A on the latest episode of their podcast, New Heights. One question stood out in particular when a Swift fan asked what a field goal is. Now, if you already know football and watch it regularly, this is, in theory, an easy question to answer.
It wasn’t the case for the Kelce brothers as they slowly realized that just explaining a field goal isn’t all that simple. The sequence starts at 42:47 in the video below: (Warning: NSFW language)
Honestly, I can see the confusion. Field goals themselves — heck, any football play involving kicking or punting the ball — are such an outlier in the overall context of the game that I’m not sure how to explain what one is.
Let’s see.
You line up and snap the ball to someone who has to hold it for a kicker to kick it through the yellow uprights on both sides of the end zone (and why are those there?). And you have to (have to?) when the offense just wants to get at least three points after failing to convert a third down, which is when … — okay, yeah, this is really complicated. I give up.
Kudos to the Kelce brothers for even trying to explain something that I think many football fans themselves just kind of take for granted. It makes you reconsider a lot of elements of the game that we probably don’t ask enough questions about.
