Jameis Winston, 30, seems poised to leave the New Orleans Saints this offseason after serving as Derek Carr’s backup in 2023.
“My goal is to be, and my desire is to be, a Super Bowl-winning starting quarterback in this league,” Winston said in a recent interview with Kyle Mosley of the Saints News Network. “Right now, that doesn’t look like a very clear picture with the New Orleans Saints.”
This could be notable for the Denver Broncos, who are expected to release quarterback Russell Wilson in March. Winston would be a logical option to replace Wilson, as we have noted several times this offseason.
Winston would not be a flashy signing for the Broncos, but once he becomes available, he could be a realistic signing. The veteran quarterback helped the Saints go 5-2 while playing for Sean Payton in 2021, and he likely won’t demand a huge salary in 2024.
If Denver parts with Wilson as expected, bringing in a veteran like Winston would give the team an experienced short-term QB solution. The Broncos could still draft a QB (perhaps 12th overall) and Winston could serve as a veteran mentor while (likely) beginning the season as a starter.
New Orleans just restructured Carr’s contract, and he is expected to remain their QB1 in 2024. If Winston wants to start this fall, he’ll have to change teams, and Denver might be able to offer him a starting role. The Broncos will be a team to watch once Winston becomes a free agent.
