Jake Fromm on learning Giants’ offense: Like taking a final after skipping classes

Jake Fromm says learning the New York Giants’ offense so quick is like “preparing for a final” after not showing up for any of the classes.

The New York Giants are still hopeful that veteran quarterback Mike Glennon will clear the NFL concussion protocol and start under center this week against the Los Angeles Chargers.

“Friday will be a practice that he could be cleared full for and, again, the contact portion for a quarterback on Friday is lighter,” head coach Joe Judge said. “We’ll put him through some designed drills to make sure he’s safe to go out there on Sunday, just as we did with Daniel earlier in the year coming off the Dallas game.”

If not, with Jones still nursing a neck injury, the Giants will turn to the very green Jake Fromm to handle the quarterbacking duties. Fromm was signed off the Buffalo Bills’ practice squad 10 days ago and has been playing catchup to learn the Giants’ offense.

Fromm also has never taken a snap in a regular season NFL game, which adds to the anxiety. The former Georgia standout is still in the high weeds but is learning fast.

“It’s hard for me to say how much I really know because I hadn’t really seen the whole thing,” Fromm said of the offensive scheme. “For me it’s just focusing on the game plan on a week-to-week basis and figuring out what the game plan is and knowing everything on the game plan.

“It’s a lot to learn. You’re just preparing for a final test where you didn’t show up for any of the classes, but it’s fun. Learning is what I like to do. I love football, love scheme. For me, it’s really fun.”

Naturally, Fromm admits he still has a lot to learn but appears confident that he can handle himself come Sunday if needed.

“There are some things I definitely feel more comfortable with and some things I feel less comfortable with, so when it comes down to it we’ll have a good plan going out there, something we feel good about and we’ll try to execute as best as we can,” Fromm said.

There are some extremely excited at the prospect of seeing Fromm under center but if that does happen this Sunday, expectations need to be tempered. Fromm only knows a fraction of what’s been a really bad offense.
