The first thing to know about the Northeast men’s basketball tournament is that is does things differently.
The games will be on March 6, 9 and 12th, with the championship played on the 12th. There are eight teams, and it will be a single-elimination tournament that will be played at the campus of the higher seed, unlike other tournaments which stay at one hosting location.

There were two teams in the Northeast that finished with a 13-3 conference record – Central Connecticut and Merrimack. Sacred Heart, with 10, was the only other team with a double-digit conference wins.
However, the most popular name in the group is Fairleigh Dickinson, a team that recently was a 16 seed in the 2023 NCAA Tournament and downed the No. 1-seeded Purdue Boilermakers. While it doesn’t have many of the same pieces, it will be a contender in this tournament.
Over the last seven years, Fairleigh Dickinson has the most Northeast men’s basketball tournament titles with two, winning in 2019 and 2016. Technically, Merrimack won the conference last season, but due to NCAA restrictions in part to the college’s transition to Division I competition, it was not awarded the automatic bid.
That said, Merrimack does have a good chance to return to the championship, and the tournament, as a whole, with an automatic bid on the line, should be a thrilling few days.
