Texas linebacker DeMarvion Overshown was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys on Friday night in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft. He could greatly factor into the team’s long-term plans.
Much of the discussion of Overshown’s role has been in regard to special teams in light of comments by Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy and the excitement displayed by special teams coach John Fossil in the draft room. However, Overshown could play a much bigger role than that would suggest.
McCarthy shared his thoughts on the pick: “This is a great fit. We were just holding our breath that he stayed up there. His playstyle to me, that’s what you’re looking for as a coach. In the third round, we felt like that was big.”
Overshown is presumably set to compete with Damone Clark to play linebacker alongside Leighton Vander Esch and Micah Parsons. He joins what could be one of the better defenses in the league. The franchise added elite cornerback Stephon Gilmore to pair across from Trevon Diggs in the secondary. With so much talent around him, the former Texas linebacker is set to thrive in his new system.
The Arp, Texas, native’s background as a safety likely appeals to the Dallas front office, which prizes position flexibility. Overshown’s ability to play linebacker, cover like a safety and pass rush could make him a useful part of the Cowboys’ defensive puzzle as early as 2023.
