Here’s what Bill Belichick said on decision to sign QB Will Grier to Patriots main roster

Bill Belichick commented on his decision to carry three quarterbacks into Week 3 matchup against the Jets.

Heading into Sunday’s game against the New York Jets, the New England Patriots will be carrying three quarterbacks on their main roster. That isn’t something that happens every day under coach Bill Belichick.

When speaking to media members on Friday, Belichick confirmed the team had signed veteran quarterback Will Grier as an emergency third option behind Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe.

Grier, who was signed off the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad, is a former third-round draft pick with two starts in the NFL.

“We want to work with him,” said Belichick. “Feel like we need depth at that position. [Had] two quarterbacks. Long year.”

The Patriots will run into one of the NFL’s most physical defenses in Sunday’s game against the Jets. Given some of the struggles along New England’s offensive front, it’s probably wise to have a backup plan for the backup plan in the annual grudge match at MetLife Stadium.
