Here’s how Bears’ Justin Fields is working on quicker release

Among the things Bears QB Justin Fields has been focusing on this offseason is a quicker release. See what that looks like here:

Justin Fields is in the middle of his first offseason as the Bears’ undisputed starting quarterback, where he’s been working on learning a new offense under Luke Getsy and perfecting issues that plagued him during his rookie season.

Fields’ personal quarterback coach Ron Veal previously detailed his offseason work, which included 16 workout sessions where the focus has been on areas of concern, including ball security and quicker delivery.

“We’re trying to speed up his drops a little bit more, trying to speed up his delivery a little bit more so he can throw the ball on time,” he said. “… A little bit more anticipation. Those are the things we focused on.”

A new video has surfaced, via Quinn MacLean on Twitter, featuring a computerized look at Fields working on his throwing motion. MacLean noted  Fields is working on bringing the ball more upright in his throws to translate to a quicker release.

Fields had a rocky first season, which included the expected rookie mistakes along with questionable play-calling and injury struggles as he was among the most-sacked quarterbacks in the NFL. While Matt Nagy deserved a fair share of the blame, Fields struggled with a quick release and protecting the football, things he’s been working on this offseason.

New head coach Matt Eberflus recently explained on the Cris Collinsworth Podcast that the Bears are implementing a “very quarterback friendly” offense that already has Fields feeling comfortable.

“I think he’s in a great spot,” Eberflus said. “We’ve had these meetings for a week and a half now, and he’s been meeting with the offensive staff and he feels very comfortable in this offense. This is a rhythm and timing offense…it’s going to be very quarterback friendly for him and it’s been quarterback friendly for a lot of guys in the past.”
