Gronk’s Bucs jersey will have that familiar No. 87 on it

Rob Gronkowski will be joining Tom Brady and the Buccaneers, and like Brady, he’ll get to wear his old number.

Rob Gronkowski is coming to the Bucs to play in a city that seems tailor-made for the future Hall of Famer’s personality. Not only will Gronk get to play in warm sunny Florida, but he’ll be able to catch passes from his good buddy Tom Brady, who happens to be the Bucs’ new quarterback.

The trade that brought Gronkowski to the Bucs sent shock waves through the NFL world, much like when Brady announced his decision to leave the Patriots and join the Bucs last month. But unlike Brady, Gronk’s arrival to the Bucs won’t be surrounded in as much controversy… number controversy that is.

Brady coming the Bucs had people wondering whether wide receiver Chris Godwin, who’d worn No. 12 since high school and had a breakout season in 2019, would give Brady his number. In the end, Brady remained TB12,  while Godwin switched to No. 14.

Fortunately, for Gronk, it doesn’t seem like they’ll be any controversy when it comes to his No. 87. The Bucs have already assigned him the number on their official website and given No. 81 to tight end Jordan Leggett, the previous owner of 87.

Leggett, in good fun, tweeted the following out yesterday after news of Gronk’s trade broke.

No. 12 and No. 87 are officially Buccaneers.
