Gregg Popovich on Victor Wembanyama: ‘A wonderful guy to coach’

San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich had some high praise for Victor Wembanyama.

The San Antonio Spurs haven’t won many games this year, a trend that Gregg Popovich wasn’t used to for years. But over the past few seasons, the Spurs have consistently been toward the bottom of the Western Conference. The same can be said about this season, but at least they have Victor Wembanyama.

Despite racking up losses, Wembanyama’s on-court talent has been painfully clear. His impact on both ends of the court has been incredible, and he already looks like a guy the Spurs can depend on to be the face of the franchise for years to come. But most importantly, he’s a great guy off the court.

Popovich recently spoke about how great it is to coach Wembanyama. (H/t Jeremy Brener of Inside the Spurs)

“He’s a wonderful guy to coach who loves to be coached,” Popovich said. “He can handle criticism and we’re working with all the fundamental, basic things. Footwork, pivoting, balance, all the things that a young player needs, and he’s jumped right in. Obviously, he’s better every month.”

Having a guy who’s just as great off the court as on it is a joy.
