Giants vs. Steelers Player of the Game: Darius Slayton

The New York Giants lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1, but WR Darius Slayton did enough to earn our Player of the Game.

It was the official start to the 2020 NFL regular season for the New York Giants and the head coaching debut for Joe Judge on Monday night, but it wasn’t exactly the memorable start either had hoped.

The Giants were defeated by the Pittsburgh Steelers, 26-16, in front of an empty MetLife Stadium.

Both teams looked the way they were expected to. The Steelers looked like a bona fide playoff team and AFC playoff powerhouse, while the Giants looked like a young rebuilding team that made mistakes.

Despite the tough start to the 2020 season, there was a few bright spots for the Giants and one that stood out the most on Monday night: wide receiver Darius Slayton.

Slayton built upon his strong rookie season with a sensational first game of 2020, hauling in six catches for 102 yards and two touchdowns.

The first touchdown was on a 41-yard strike from Daniel Jones that put the Giants up 10-3 early on.

The second touchdown came when the game was more out of reach and Jones found Slayton for a two-yard strike that made it 26-16.

Slayton led all rookie wide receivers last season with eight touchdowns and he’s already well on his way to putting up that kind of production again.

The Giants appear to have their play-making receiver in Slayton going forward, as he now has 10 career touchdowns in the span of 13 months.
