The New York Giants have needs along their offensive line, defensive line, at the linebacker position and just about everywhere in their secondary, but specifically, at free safety.
One area that is not of red flag concern currently is at wide receiver, where the Giants have a surprising amount of talent, including youngsters Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton, as well as veteran Golden Tate.
Despite that, Pro Football Focus has the Giants passing on all of those areas of need to draft another — you guessed it — wide receiver in their latest mock draft.
4. NEW YORK GIANTS — WR CEEDEE LAMB, OKLAHOMA
The Giants’ offense is currently chock full of complementary wideouts, but no there’s no true number one. While it’s a loaded wide receiver class, chances are you won’t find that No. 1 receiver on the wrap in the second round. Insert CeeDee Lamb, the do-it-all receiver who broke 26 tackles on 62 receptions this season. It’s not like the Sooners were only pumping him screens, either. Lamb’s average depth of target was 13.2 yards downfield this year.
No one knows what style of offense the Giants will run in 2020 under new head coach Joe Judge, so arguing that they don’t have a true No. 1 is personal interpretation.
Do the Giants have a true No. 1 by today’s standards? Arguably not, but what isn’t up for debate is the desperate need to fix their offensive line and defense.
As we saw when the team still had Odell Beckham Jr. on the roster, a true No. 1 isn’t going to win you games. However, as we’ve seen in these NFL Playoffs, a strong offensive line and a ferocious defense will.
Lamb would be a nice asset for have in East Rutherford if all else was right in the world, but it’s not. The Giants need a quality offensive tackle and a game-changing defender far more than they need another body at a somewhat deep position — one of the few they have.
