The New York Giants and general manager Joe Schoen remain hard at work ahead of the official start to free agency.
On Sunday, it was revealed the team would re-sign wide receiver Sterling Shepard. Less than 12 hours later, the Giants have also re-signed punter Jamie Gillan to a two-year contract.
The two-year deal is worth $4 million with an additional $1 million in possible incentives.
Gillan, who signed with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent out of Arkansas–Pine Bluff in 2019, found his way to the Giants in 2022. He was signed to a reserve/futures contract and went on to beat out Riley Dixon for the starting job. He also briefly spent time with the Buffalo Bills (2021).
Nicknamed the “Scottish Hammer,” Gillan is a native of Inverness, Scotland.
Gillan struggled at times early in the 2022 regular season but rounded into shape late, earning praise from special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey.
“You see the maturation process of it. You see him getting better. He’s getting more confident,” McGaughey said in early January. “He’s doing a lot better. He’s working hard. That’s part of being a young punter in this league, you’re just trying to figure it out. And I think he’s on his way to figuring it out.”
The Giants clearly saw enough improvement to invest in Gillan for at least two more years.
