The New York Giants began training camp with plenty of depth at tight end. With less than two weeks to go before the regular season opener, that depth has whittled away.
With Levine Toilolo (Achilles) out for the year and Kyle Rudolph coming off foot surgery, the last thing the Giants needed was to have Evan Engram get hurt.

But that’s what happened last Sunday night in the team’s preseason finale against New England. Engram hobbled off the field with a calf injury. The Giants have little clarity on how long Engram may be sidelined.
“To be honest with you, there wasn’t really much to report on from yesterday,” head coach Joe Judge said when asked about Engram’s status.
“He wasn’t out with us on the field, he was with the trainers. Yesterday was really kind of a down day for him, in terms of what it is. I don’t think we’re going to have anything hard evidence-wise in these next couple of days. The plan is really to give him a few days, which extends really through this weekend, to see how his body responds and see where he’s at.”
Currently, the Giants have just one healthy tight end on the roster in Kaden Smith. Rudolph has been cleared to practice but until we see him run full speed, he can’t be relied on.
In forming their practice squad on Wednesday, the team signed back two players they waived on Tuesday — Nakia Griffin-Stewart and Jake Hausmann. They also claimed 6-foot-6 wide receiver Collin Johnson off waivers from Jacksonville and added him to their 53-man roster.
