The New York Giants have not fared particularly well in many offseason power rankings, most recently checking in at No. 30 overall on Peter King’s list. However, their offseason — consisting of a new head coach, strong free agency haul and solid draft — has given some a glimmer of hope.
Expectations are still tempered however, which is why Rick Gosselin of Sports Illustrated didn’t get too carried away when ranking the offseason of all 32 NFL teams.
In Gosselin’s list, the Giants did much better than their recent power rankings history, checking in at a modest No. 20 overall.
20. New York Giants. The Giants have a new head coach (Joe Judge), a new offensive play caller (Jason Garrett) and two of the best young offensive skill players at their positions in QB Daniel Jones and HB Saquon Barkley. New York spent a first-round draft pick on a blocker to protect Jones (OT Andrew Thomas) and signed MLB Blake Martinez and CB James Bradberry to bolster the 25th ranked defense.
It’s a long climb back for the Giants, so it’s understandable that even in the most optimistic setting, they aren’t receiving a ton of love. But the good news is that they are trending in the right direction, both in personnel and on the executive level.
2020 may not represent the magical turnaround so many are hoping for, but it should be a major step in the right direction and the beginning of the end of this (near) decade-long futility.
