Giants players thrilled to have their coordinators back in 2023

New York Giants players are thrilled to have offensive coordinator Mike Kafka and defensive coordinator Wink Martindale back in 2023.

Following their unexpected success in 2022, New York Giants coordinators Mike Kafka and Wink Martindale quickly became hot commodities on the head coaching circuit this offseason.

Kafka, who was a first-time offensive coordinator for the Giants last season, was a finalist for the Arizona Cardinals’ job. He also held interviews with the Indianapolis Colts, Carolina Panthers, and Houston Texans.

Martindale, meanwhile, was a finalist of his own. He very nearly landed the Colts job but had some philosophical differences with owner Jim Irsay.

Ultimately, both Kafka and Martindale returned to the Giants.

That was music to the ears of quarterback Daniel Jones, who was also thrilled to see quarterbacks coach Shea Tierney, who interviewed for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator job, return.

“I think it’s huge,” Jones said. “It definitely gives us a little bit of a head start.”

Safety Xavier McKinney was equally as “thrilled” to see Martindale back.

“(It’s) great to have him back,” McKinney said. “We can continue to build off what we had last year.”

Both Jones and McKinney understand that NFL business is NFL business. And while they support their coaches and wish the best for them, having them return is a breath of fresh air — especially considering the franchise has been in a constant state of turnover for nearly a decade.

Consistency is essential and the Giants finally have that.
