The Arizona Cardinals bit the bullet and released wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins last week, setting in motion what’s sure to be a furious rush to sign him.
Hopkins is a top talent, a true No. 1 and could be the difference-maker for teams on the fringe or a true contender.
Throughout the offseason, there were many trade rumors surrounding Hopkins and one name that continued to pop up was the New York Giants. Accordingly, it makes sense that now that Hopkins is a free agent, the Giants again pop up as a potential destination.
Jeremy Fowler of ESPN recently named the Giants a darkhorse to sign Hopkins and later added them to his list of the “best fits.”
New York has many supporting players at wide receiver but no alpha. Is it time to give Daniel Jones an elite guy once and for all? Perhaps Darren Waller assumes that role, but he’s a tight end. The NFC East is only getting better, and the Giants might need to win some shootouts. The problem is that the Giants have $4.5 million in cap space and still need to extend Saquon Barkley.
Cap space is certainly an issue when it comes to the Giants potentially signing Hopkins. Right now, they simply don’t have it but general manager Joe Schoen could move some money around if he was truly keen on adding a top receiver.
Options include signing Barkley to a long-term deal and extending one or both of Leonard Williams and Adoree’ Jackson.
At the end of the day, it seems unlikely that Hopkins will end up in New York but as former Giants general manager Jerry Reese used to say, “never say never.”
