The New York Giants may be without one of their best defensive players for the remainder of the season following what appeared to be a serious injury on Sunday.

Early in the first quarter of a 37-34 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, Giants linebacker Lorenzo Carter went down in a heap. Almost immediately, the cart was brought out and Carter was taken into the locker room.

Although he gave a thumbs-up to his teammates as he exited the field, it was obvious that Carter would be out for a while. Still, head coach Joe Judge remained hopefully that it would be a short-term thing.

“I don’t have the official diagnosis right now. The trainers have told me that right now they’ve got to examine and get the exact deal, but our thoughts and prayers are with him, as well. I’m hoping that it’s a short-term deal,” Judge said.

Carter’s teammates appeared a bit less optimistic than their coach.

“Obviously praying for Zo for it not to be something serious, not be out for too long, a quick recovery. I haven’t talked to him too much about the extent of it, but obviously I know he came out of the game,” linebacker Blake Martinez said.

Initially, the Giants listed Carter as questionable to return with an ankle injury, but he was later declared out with an Achilles injury.

To the naked eye, it appeared to be a ruptured Achilles, but we’re not doctors and there is no use in speculating. Carter will undergo further tests on Monday and Judge will likely reveal the diagnosis during his afternoon conference call with reporters.
