Giants’ Joe Schoen dismisses draft praise: ‘Lasts about two days’

New York Giants GM Joe Schoen knows better than to get hung up on 2023 NFL draft praise, noting that it will dissipate in a few days.

Following the 2023 NFL draft, the New York Giants received high grades for their class of seven prospects. Of those seven, three had previously been mocked in the first round.

With the draft in the rearview mirror and high praise continuing to pour in, general manager Joe Schoen is making it clear there is still plenty of work to do.

“(The praise) lasts about two days. You don’t win games in April,” Schoen said. “The social media rankings and everything like that, you know, it’s about what we do this fall and how we go out there and compete when it matters and how we continue to build this off-season and get bigger, faster, stronger, through our strength program and then how we prepare and execute in August, I think there’s a process.

“And do I like some of the guys we drafted? Yeah. But still, like Dabs said, you know, in this press conference, every year is different, and the team has got to gel, and we have got to build chemistry. We have to stay healthy. There’s a lot that goes into it.”

Now that free agency and the draft are behind them, the Giants have to get to work on the field and develop chemistry with the new players on the team.

Building chemistry will be a big theme for Big Blue this offseason with their offense looking extremely different than it did last year. Quarterback Daniel Jones will continue to build a rapport with Isaiah Hodgins after being together on the field for less than a season.

Jones will also have to get used to a bunch of new additions on the offense, including free agents Paris Campbell and Jamison Crowder, trade acquisition Darren Waller, as well as rookies Jalin Hyatt, Eric Gray, and John Michael Schmitz.

After an impressive first year under Brian Daboll and his staff, the Giants hope that with an improved roster, they can continue to build toward becoming a contender.
