Giants’ Evan Engram ready to step into a leadership role

New York Giants TE Evan Engram wants to not only shed his injury label in 2020, but become a team leader both on and off the field.

New York Giants tight end Evan Engram took a “very strong, very aggressive” approach to his rehab this offseason and “feels great” entering training camp.

But that’s about as much information as Engram is willing to provide when it comes to his recovery from a foot injury that ended his 2019 season prematurely.

“We’re not allowed to get into the details, that’s a Coach Judge rule,” Engram told reporters as he refused to answer any additional injury-related questions.

With the hype around him building, Engram is aware that some doubt his ability to stay healthy, but he’s not allowing it to weigh him down. Rather, he’s completely focused on learning Jason Garrett’s offense and doing what he can to help his team.

“I’ve had a very blessed offseason. I’ve been working my butt off in rehab and getting back,” Engram said. “I’m not really worried about what all the other people are saying. I can only control what’s in front of me each and every day. That’s coming in, working hard during training camp and learning this offense and being a good teammate and a good leader.”

As part of being a leader, Engram knows he not only has to stay on the field, but he must learn Jason Garrett’s offense in short order and then have an impact on each game this season.

“Tight end in general is a very detail specific position. I don’t really want to compare it other offenses. There is definitely a lot of things we have to learn, a lot of things we need to iron out, a lot of details we have to perfect,” Engram said.

“[I need to] just be myself, use my speed, be physical. Be a durable player, be available. Come in each and every day and improving on things that need improvement. I think that’s the best way to improve, that’s the best way to help your team. The best way to help your team win games, each and every day getting better at something. That’s my goal and that’s what I plan to do for this season.”

The Giants are counting on exactly that from Engram.
