The New York Giants were one of eight teams to earn an “A” offseason grade from CBS Sports.
Your view of Big Blue’s offseason depends almost entirely on what you make of QB Daniel Jones. He may not yet be a sure thing as a downfield passer, but New York isn’t ridiculously overpaying for an efficient, athletic, 25-year-old playoff winner under center; after inevitable extensions for elites like Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert, his $40M per-year renewal might not even be a top-10 mark going into 2023. His new weapons, TE Darren Waller and WR Parris Campbell, are big injury risks but clear upgrades. Ditto for rookie WR Jalin Hyatt. On the other side, LB Bobby Okereke and first-round CB Deonte Banks should help the middle and back end of the “D.”
The Giants made big offseason moves on both sides of the ball but none were bigger than re-signing Daniel Jones to a four-year, $160 million contract.
Jones had a breakout 2022 season earning him a massive extension. However, the team has a lot of outs as only $81 million is guaranteed and $35 million is in incentives.
To help make sure their investment looks sound, New York franchised tagged Saquon Barkley and traded a third-round pick for Pro Bowl tight end Darren Waller. Big Blue also added speedster receivers in Parris Campbell (in free agency from the Colts) and Jalin Hyatt (in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft).
The team also brought back veteran wideouts Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton, who have a great connection with Jones. Then they drafted John Michael Schmitz (arguably the best center in the class) in the second round.
On the defensive side of the ball, Big Blue drafted Deonte Banks (an athletic corner that fits with Wink Martindale’s system) in the first round. The team also shored up the middle of the defensive by extending Dexter Lawrence and then singing speedier linebackers Bobby Okereke and Jarrad Davis.
Finally, to add some more depth to the secondary the franchise signed veteran safety Bobby McCain from a divisional rival.
