Giants dropped by Bears, 17-13: Instant analysis

Instant analysis of the New York Giants’ 17-13 Week 2 loss to the Chicago Bears at Solider Field.

There isn’t a whole lot to say about these 2020 New York Giants except they really never really had much of a chance coming into the season. It was the wrong year to try to go it with a new coaching staff and a load of new players. Teams needed as much continuity as possible if they were planning on competing this year.

The Giants are still finding themselves. There is very little fluidity to things right now, but they are playing hard for first year Joe Judge, even though the results aren’t showing up on the scoreboard.

Their Week 2 trip to Chicago play the Bears at an empty Soldier Field began about as bad as one could have predicted.

Star running back Saquon Barkley left the game in the first quarter with a knee injury, suspected to be a torn ACL, and could be out for a long stretch — perhaps the entire season. He will be evaluated when the team returns to New York.

Then their most trusted receiver, Sterling Shepard, sustained a toe injury on his left foot late in the second quarter. Shepard tried to give it go in the second half but was ruled out after hobbling off the field a second time.

Meanwhile, the Giants had fallen behind, 17-0, but were not dead by any means. The defense, flustered by some ugly play from Bears quarterback Mitch Trubisky in the first half, regrouped in the second half while the offense showed some life behind a more accurate Jones and backup running back Dion Lewis did his best to try to defray the loss of Barkley.

At the 2:00 warning, it was a 17-13 game thanks to a 50-yard miss by Bears placekicker Cairo Santos. The Giants took over on their own 33 with no time outs. A valiant final drive died 13 plays later at the gun on an incomplete pass intended for Golden Tate in the end zone.

The Giants are now 0-2.
