The New York Giants currently have 18 injured or absent players accounting for more than $33 million in salary cap space. However, that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the team’s cap issues.
In addition to that salary, the Giants also carry nearly $16 million in dead cap, which is spread out among 66 players. Some of the names won’t come as much of a surprise, but others might.
As a reminder, here’s how former NFL agent Joel Corry defines dead cap:
Dead money is a salary cap charge for a player that is no longer on a team’s roster. It exists because of how salary cap accounting rules operate.
Signing bonuses, option bonuses and certain roster bonuses are prorated or spread out evenly over the life of a contract for a maximum of five years. When a player is released, traded or retires, the remaining proration of these salary components immediately accelerate onto his team’s current salary cap.
In some cases, a player is released and then re-signed to a new deal or is terminated from the practice squad and then added to the 53-man roster. That dead cap will remain on the books.
With that in mind, here’s a look at all 66 players that currently contribute to the Giants’ dead cap and exactly how much they account for.
