Gators take mild tumble in ESPN’s FPI after Las Vegas Bowl loss

Here’s where the Gators landed in ESPN’s updated FPI after Saturday’s defeat.

Florida football took a beating on the field on Saturday during the 2022 Las Vegas Bowl, barely avoiding the program’s first shutout since 1988, against the Oregon State Beavers. The 30-3 loss was a bit more lopsided than expected despite the Gators’ reduced roster resulting in the second-straight season that the Orange and Blue finished under .500.

While the action on the field was ugly, ESPN’s Football Power Index did not punish Florida too badly. UF is the highest-ranked team with a losing record so far — though there are still three .500 teams ahead of them awaiting their bowl games.

The FPI rankings were developed by ESPN in 2013 to measure each team’s overall strength and predict results throughout the season. As the schedule progresses, the data used to determine a team’s FPI ranking will come from the games played while also predicting the outcomes for each future matchup.

Take a look at some of the FPI numbers below.
