Former Rutgers football star is praised by Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy: ‘We’re expecting him to continue to be Isiah Pacheco’

Eric Bieniemy praises former Rutgers running back Isiah Pacheco.

Kansas City Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco is coming off the best showing of his rookie season. It was a performance against the Los Angeles Chargers that certainly left an impression on the Chiefs coaching staff.

Pacheco showed on Sunday why he was a fan favorite at Rutgers. He also backed up all the buzz he has received this season, including that the seventh-round pick was the steal of this spring’s NFL draft.

He had a career-best 107 yards on 15 carries in a 30-27 win last week at the Chargers. Pacheco is certainly on the ascend. The week before in a home win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, Pacheco had what was then a career day with 82 rushing yards on 16 carries.

Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy saw growth and development from the former Rutgers star.

“You know what, I thought he did a great job of allowing the game to come to him. He was patient. He’s just one of those guys – early on he’s not as patient because he just wants to take the ball and go run into something, but you love that about the kid,” Bieniemy told reporters this week.

“But I thought as the game went along, I thought he got in a rhythm. On top of that, our offensive line did an outstanding job. But you know one thing that I’m going to mention to him, and I’ll say it here, is anybody can do something once. It’s about putting consistent behavior on tape. And, so we’re going to need that from him, so he has to continue to evolve, he has to continue to grow but on top of that I know (running backs) coach (Greg Lewis) Lew is going to do an outstanding job with him as he has always done with that entire (running back) group. We’re expecting him to continue to be Isiah Pacheco.”

On the season, Pacheco has run the ball 75 times for 386 yards and a touchdown along with three catches for 13 yards.
