Former Green Bay Packers tight end Jace Sternberger is signing with the Buffalo Bills after revitalizing his football career with a standout season in the USFL.
Sternberger, 27, worked out for the Bills on Monday. Agent Mike McCartney confirmed the signing on Tuesday.
In Buffalo, Sternberger will join a talented tight end room that features Dawson Knox and rookie Dalton Kincaid, a first-round pick in 2023.
A third-round pick of the Packers in 2019, Sternberger caught only 12 passes over 18 games with the Packers between 2019 and 2021. He was released following a two-game suspension for violating league rules in 2021.
After departing Green Bay, Sternberger spent time at the NFL level with the Seattle Seahawks, Washington Football Team and Pittsburgh Steelers. In 2023, his football career was revived when he caught 33 passes for 517 yards and a league-high (and USFL record) seven touchdowns for the USFL champion Birmingham Stallions.
Talent was never an issue for Sternberger, a dominant pass-catching force at Texas A&M. He dealt with injuries, including a concussion during his first training camp, and off-the-field issues while in Green Bay. He’ll get a chance to prove he’s still an NFL-caliber player during training camp with the Bills.
Sternberger was a teammate and top target of USFL MVP Alex McGough, who signed with the Packers before training camp.
