Former Longhorn Casey Thompson opens spring practice as Nebraska’s starting QB

Nebraska took in two transfers this offseason in Thompson and Chubba Purdy.

Just days after Ohio State quarterback Quinn Ewers announced his transfer to Texas, Casey Thompson entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal.

Thompson was among the constant rotation at the quarterback position throughout Steve Sarkisian’s first year with the program. Hudson Card initially own the job in fall camp, but his struggles led to Thompson getting the nod the rest of the season.

Neither quarterback ultimately took control of the starting job, although injuries certainly played a factor. Thompson went 4-6 as a starter and passed for 2,113 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Nebraska quickly became the favorite landing spot for Thompson once he entered the portal. He officially announced his decision to head to Lincoln in January.

Roughly 10 days later, Florida State quarterback Chubba Purdy also announced his decision to transfer to Nebraska. This meant Thompson would likely find himself amidst another position battle.

However, according to a recent report from ESPN, Purdy has been nicked up and wasn’t able to do much at the first spring practice on Monday. Offensive coordinator Mark Whipple seemed to give Thompson the edge as the starter moving forward.

I think he’s (Thompson) the best one right now. That might change tomorrow. There’s nothing set in stone. What I saw today, attitude-wise and talent-wise, we’ve got enough there to be more than successful.

Thompson and Purdy are the two favorites to compete for the starting role, with returnees Logan Smothers and Heinrich Haarberg filling out the depth chart behind them.
