Former Gators running back La’Mical Perine cut by New York Jets

Former Florida running back La’Mical Perine was cut by the Jets on Monday. New York drafted him in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL draft after he played four years in Gainesville.

After two seasons with the New York Jets, former Florida running back La’Mical Perine has been cut and is headed to free agency.

NFL teams need to be down to a 53-man roster by August 30, and Perine was too far down the Jets’ depth chart to survive the cuts. As a rookie, he rushed for 232 yards and scored two touchdowns. He failed to follow things up in his sophomore campaign, appearing in just four games and making just eight carries.

The emergence of Breece Hall, a 2022 second-round pick, and Michael Carter, a 2021 fourth-rounder, forced Perine down the depth chart. The writing was on the wall in recent weeks, and now Perine, a former fourth-rounder himself, must look for another opportunity to play in the NFL.

He saw much more success at Florida, racking up 2,485 yards on 493 carries and scoring 22 touchdowns over four seasons. Perine was a contributor in Gainesville from day one, but he never quite found his footing in New York.

The good news is that Perine had solid showings in the preseason against the Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles. He carried the ball just one time in the Jets’ final preseason game before being cut, though. Hopefully, a team saw enough from him to warrant a second chance.
