Former Bills quarterback Matt Barkley has been connected to the Giants.
According to Giants Wire, Barkley had a workout with the team this week.
Barkley, 33, was with the Bills (4-2) throughout this offseason. After spending 2018-20 with the Bills, he signed with the Titans in 2021 before being released and returning to western New York last season.
He sustained an elbow injury during the preseason and was placed on injured reserve. At the end of the summer, Barkley was released via injury settlement.
Barkley having a workout with the Giants likely is just the team doing their due diligence. Their starter, Daniel Jones, did not play last week against the Bills. If he remains out for an extensive period, the Giants might need some depth. Quarterback Ian Book also had a workout.
But regarding the Bills, Barkley working out signals a few things.
First, he’s evidently healthy enough to play again.
So why haven’t the Bills re-signed him? Well, the Bills could be fine with Shane Buechele. He’s currently doing Barkley’s old job of being the third-string quarterback for the Bills on the team’s practice squad. Buechele is also a younger option at 25-years-old. Kyle Allen remains Josh Allen main backup under center.
But full details of an injury settlement are rarely made public. Depending on the details of the settlement, the Bills cannot re-sign Barkley until a certain amount of time has passed. Have we gone long enough? Who knows. But Barkley is out there again.
