Former Bills playing on Championship weekend

AFC

Titans

Alas, the Titans have no connections to the Bills, either. But they do have two connections to Buffalo:

The two Buffalo natives connected to the Titans are David Fluellen and Brett Kern. Fluellen won’t be suiting up, though. The Lockport native appeared in two games this season with the Titans in a special teams role, making one tackle, but ended his season on their injured reserve list.

Speaking of special teams, while you might just think Kern is “only a punter,” he’s an important player. If Titans coach Mike Vrabel wants to play the field position battle, there’s no one better at it than the Grand Island native. Pro Football Focus graded him as the NFL’s best punter this season with a 90.1 overall grade. He’s by far their best punter, too. Packers punter JK Scott is their No. 2 with mark of 75.2. Now that’s some distance.

Chiefs

RB LeSean McCoy

The Bills surprisingly released running back LeSean McCoy at the end of training camp this summer after the team’s front office backed him and his abilities to still play… a lot. McCoy quickly signed with the Chiefs, citing his connections to Andy Reid, the Chiefs head coach who was McCoy’s bench boss earlier in his career with the Eagles. However, McCoy has been in-and-out of the lineup with KC. He was active in their divisional round win over the Texans, but did not have a carry.

2019 stats: 13 games played, 465 rushing yards, 4.6 yards per carry, 4 TDs.

A former second-round pick of the Bills, Reggie Ragland never suited up in a game with Buffalo in his career. He tore his ACL then when Sean McDermott entered the equation in 2017, he was traded to the Chiefs before that regular season. Ragland features as the Chiefs’ weakside linebacker and started seven of 14 games in the regular season, playing in 21 percent of defensive snaps this season. He made four tackles in their playoff win over the Texans last week, playing in 41 percent of snaps.

2019 stats: 14 games played, 30 tackles, two sacks.

Like Ragland, Sammy Watkins never played for the Bills under McDermott. He was traded to the Rams prior to the 2017 season, then after that year, he inked a deal with the Chiefs. The former first-round pick of the Bills plays a role in KC’s slot, but often finds himself down the pecking order for quarterback Patrick Mahomes in terms of playmakers, as he suits up in a dynamic offense with the likes of Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, among others.

2019 stats: 14 games played, 52 catches, 673 yards, 3 TDs.
