Florida Panthers at Detroit Red Wings odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Florida Panthers at Detroit Red Wings odds, with NHL betting picks and predictions

The Detroit Red Wings (4-12-3) host the Florida Panthers (11-2-2) for a second consecutive day at Little Caesar’s Arena in Detroit. Puck drop is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET. Here we analyze the Panthers-Red Wings odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

The Panthers, who have five wins in their past six games, embarrassed the Wings 7-2 Friday evening, scoring four first-period goals. It wasn’t much of a game after that, and the Wings went without a power-play goal for their 11th consecutive game — they haven’t done that since the 1950-51 season. Florida chased Wings goalie Thomas Greiss from net early, as he allowed four goals on just 13 shots.

“We were terrible,” Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said after the game. Will the rematch be any different today?

Panthers at Red Wings: Projected starting goalies

Sergei Bobrovsky (5-1-1, 3.33 GAA, 0.884 SV%) at Jonathan Bernier (3-2-0, 3.01 GAA, 0.896 SV%)

Bobrovsky has faced the Wings twice since Jan. 30, winning both matchups along the way and only allowing three goals total in the two contests. He has won three of his last four starts but was roughed up by the Tampa Bay Lightning his last time out — allowing six goals on 28 shots Feb. 13.

Bernier didn’t start yesterday but still saw 39:50 of playing time after an early goalie change. It didn’t matter. Bernier gave up three goals on 26 shots, good for a 0.885 SV%. Expected to between the pipes to start this game, it probably won’t be much of a different outcome.

Panthers at Red Wings: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Panthers 4, Red Wings 2

Money line (ML)

The Panthers (-175), who had a season high in goals, outplayed the Red Wings across the board last night and are now 4-1 versus Detroit this season. We’re not a big fan of chalk betting, but if you want what appears to be an easy win with a small profit – this feels like a solid one- or two-unit wager. Nothing to brag about with a win here; Detroit is just that bad.

It is worth noting the Red Wings might be a bit amped up Saturday. For starters, they just got the snot kicked out of them. Beyond that, longtime team masseur Sergei Tchekmarev sadly passed away yesterday. He had been with the training staff since 1998. Will that be enough to give them extra motivation to grind out a victory? With a lack of overall talent, I just can’t bank on that at this point.

Against the spread (ATS)

After last night’s debacle, it’s easy to jump on the Panthers (-1.5), who are 4-1 ATS in their last five, to win by at least two goals again in back-to-back days despite being on the road. The Wings are 5-2 ATS in their past 7 games, but the bottom fell out yesterday. At +150, the juice is definitely worth the squeeze for a one-unit wager here. Bet the Panthers -1.5 (+150) to win by at least two scores again Saturday.

Over/Under (O/U)

While the two combined for nine goals last night, don’t expect that to be repeated today with a standard O/U at 5.5. Both teams were near the top in limiting high-danger, 5-on-5 situations, and the Panthers can’t be expected to score that kind of volume on back-to-back nights. While the lean here is the Over (-115), I’d PASS here as the result will likely be razor thin margins. The Wings are 2-3 vs. the O/U in their last five while the Panthers are 5-0.
