Florida Atlantic hires former Texas head coach Tom Herman

Tom Herman is officially FAU’s next head coach.

Florida Atlantic announced the hiring of Tom Herman as their next head coach on Thursday.

Herman’s name was in the mix for several coaching gigs across the college football landscape, including Cincinnati, but ultimately the Owls were able to land the former Texas head coach.

Florida Atlantic fired Willie Taggart last month after going 5-7 this season and 15-18 throughout his three seasons in Boca Raton. Athletic director Brian White has high hopes that Herman can right the ship for the Owls’ football program.

Throughout the process and the more we talked with Coach Herman, the more it became apparent to me that he was the right person to lead our football program. Beyond his knowledge of the game, which is obvious by his success over the years, he also truly cares about the young people in his program. He has coached winning programs everywhere he has been and we believe he can be tremendously successful at FAU as well.

Herman most recently spent the 2021 season in the NFL with the Chicago Bears as an offensive analyst. Prior to his stint with the Bears, Herman went 32-18 as the head coach for Texas and made four consecutive bowl trips in 2017-2020.
