On Friday, Mathews released his top six schools and Texas made the cut. Alabama, Florida, Oklahoma, Mississippi State and LSU were also among the final programs vying for the Louisiana native.
The 6-1, 204-pound versatile athlete is rated the No. 2 safety in the 2022 recruiting class and a top-40 prospect in the nation according to 247Sports composite rankings.

Mathews played on both sides of the ball for Ponchatoula High School in 2020 and was a primary reason the team concluded the season with a 7-2 record and advanced to the second round of state playoffs.
Texas originally offered Mathews on April 11, 2020 under Tom Herman’s staff, but Steve Sarkisian re-offered him on Jan. 21 of this year. Sarkisian has developed serious momentum on the recruiting trail over the last two months and has the attention of many of the nation’s top prospects.
Rivals lists Mathews as the No. 1 safety in the 2022 cycle.
