The City of Grover Beach honored former New York Giants offensive lineman Tom Rehder earlier this month with its Citizen of the Year Award.
Rehder, a third-round pick of the New England Patriots in the 1988 NFL Draft, spent the 1990 season with the Giants, picking up a championship ring after Big Blue knocked off the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXV.
After two seasons with the Patriots and one with the Giants, Rehder spent a year out of football before joining the Sacramento Surge of the World League of American Football (WLAF). He later retired in 1993.
Rehder attended Santa Maria High School and now owns Mongo’s Saloon and 3 Fat Guys Diner in Grover Beach.
“By giving back and participating and becoming involved, you have a chance to make a difference. So if you sit on the couch, you’re not doing much. So get off the couch, go meet some people and make things happen,” Rehder told KSBY News.
Rehder accepted the award on February 3 at the Grover Beach City Council, anchored by his wife and daughter.
