It was hard to take your eyes off of wide receiver Troy Omeire throughout fall camp last offseason due to his impressive physique and acrobatic catches.
As a true freshman, Omeire quickly climbed the depth chart and was widely projected to surpass Brennan Eagles as the starter at the X spot. Unfortunately, he suffered a season-ending knee injury just weeks before Texas was set to face UTEP in the season opener.
Now that Eagles and Tarik Black have entered the 2021 NFL draft, Omeire has an incredible opportunity to become one of Texas’ top receiving threats alongside Joshua Moore.
ESPN (link requires paid subscription) recently listed Omeire as a breakout candidate for the Longhorns in 2021. The list specifically included sophomores who received little playing time, if any, in 2020.
Omeire tore his ACL on Aug. 16, just before last season. The 6-3, 226-pound wideout was expected to start as a true freshman. He is a real mismatch for opposing defenses, as he moves like a wide receiver and looks like an H-back. With him healthy and with Steve Sarkisian’s arrival, Omeire is someone who could move all around the field and dictate defensive personnel. He is an under-the-radar candidate to be a breakout performer.
Omeire was a four-star prospect out of the 2020 recruiting class and a top-40 player in the state of Texas, according to 247Sports composite.
Regardless of who wins the quarterback competition between Casey Thompson and Hudson Card, they’ll have a handful of solid receivers to throw to.
Take a look at a few of Omeire’s highlights from last offseason.
