Dwayne Haskins goes unclaimed on waivers, becomes free agent

After being released from Washington, former Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins went unclaimed on waivers and will now be a free agent.

Former Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins has cleared waivers and will become a free agent.

The former Heisman finalist was released by the Washington Football Team on Monday because of some off the field issues in combination with subpar performances this season, one in which he was originally handed the starting job. The fact that Washington took the financial risk says all you need to know about what the team thought of his future.

Teams had until 4:00 p.m. Tuesday to claim Haskins. Had a team done so, it would have been on the hook for the remaining money left on his rookie contract, which stands at about $4.26 million. However, with no claim by another team, Washington now stands to take an over $8 million hit in cap space for the former first-round pick.

Haskins now hits the free-agent market, and it will be interesting to see if any team is willing to take a chance on him based on the game film and what we’ve seen from him outside of the field of play.

We, of course, wish him well and know the type of person Hasksin is based on his time at Ohio State. Hopefully, he gets another shot and learns from anything but a model start to his NFL career in our nation’s capital.
