Former Vol Drew Gilbert’s contract with Houston detailed.

The 2022 Major League Baseball first-year player draft took place July 17–19 in Los Angeles, California.

The 2022 MLB draft was 20 rounds. Tennessee head coach Tony Vitello served as a Major League Baseball Network analyst during the first round.

Ten student-athletes on the Vols’ 2022 roster were selected during the MLB draft.

Tennessee junior centerfielder Drew Gilbert was selected by Houston in the first round (No. 28 overall).

The 5-foot-9, 185-pound Gilbert appeared in 58 games for the Vols in 2022, totaling 11 home runs, 70 RBIs, 60 runs, 72 hits, 21 doubles, four triples, 33 walks and four stolen bases. He started 57 contests during the 2022 campaign.

Jim Callis of MLB Pipeline detailed Gilbert signing with Houston.

“First-rounder Drew Gilbert signs with Astros for $2.5 million (slot 28 value = $2,621,700),” Callis announced. “Aggressive hitter with excellent hand-eye coordination, solid to plus speed, very good instincts in center, fastball to 93 mph when he relieved in past.”
