Donovan Mitchell shows love to Victor Wembanyama after Spurs loss to Cavaliers

After the San Antonio Spurs’ loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday night, Donovan Mitchell had some high praise for Victor Wembanyama.

On Sunday night, the San Antonio Spurs lost their five games in a row, suffering a 115-117 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Following a fairly overwhelming first quarter from the Spurs, the Cavs battled back and went up big late in the game. However, despite Cleveland leading by as many as 16 points in the final frame, the Spurs still came back and made it interesting at the end.

A free-throw-heavy fourth-quarter showing from Victor Wembanyama, paired with a sweet ending from Tre Jones, kept the Spurs in the game, but as has been the story too many times this season, they fell just short of a victory.

After the game, Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell had a ton of praise for Wembanyama, who finished the game with a solid statline in another impressive performance. (H/t Spencer Davies of Cavs Insider)

“He’s as advertised,” Mitchell said. “I don’t know if he’s gonna fill out like Giannis [Antetokounmpo] or what it’ll be, but right now he’s doing things that…. You can tell he’s young, so he’s doing things that you can see what he will ultimately be, the competitor he is. I saw it against the [Milwaukee] Bucks, seeing it [Sunday], never stopping.”

Wembanyama finished the game with 24 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, one steal, and five blocks while shooting 6-of-13 from the floor and 2-of-5 from beyond the arc.

As for Mitchell, he put up 17 points, two rebounds, and nine assists while shooting a rough 7-of-18 from the floor and 1-of-10 from behind the three-point line.
